Steve:

Hello there, everyone. And welcome to senior living on the Suncoast. I'm your host, Steve Bennet-Martin. And I'm happy to bring you the only senior centered podcast to assist us all. As we navigate the complex systems of aging together, up and down, the Suncoast. My mission with this podcast is to help make sure that the rest of your life is the best of your life, which means today we're going to be continuing on our caregiver, glossary. With the help of Mark and Elli Baldwin from sun ways, assistant living concierge, but first wanted to get everyone an update on the Suncoast senior care awards. Nominations are still going on through this Sunday, October 25th. So you can nominate all your favorites in healthcare, both by the job title and by the company. Also wanted to let everyone know that at Heartis Venice, we are having our Halloween party for the community on the 27th, in one hour time slots, where we are still practicing all of our social distancing protocols. And so you can call to RSVP. Similarly that Friday we are having the same event again, but this time for professionals. You can RSVP to either one by calling (941) 499-1800. Feel free to ask for me by name and in the meantime, in the middle of the week, if you're also are a professional or someone in the community and looking for something to do up in the Branson area at 11:30 AM on that Thursday. The seniors blue book is helping Westminster manner, throw their yearly mystery as the manner which I've been to before the past few years. And it is okay. Always a great time. It's a nice little lighthearted murder mystery event that you'll get to participate on. And it will be a try through, so that is practicing social distancing as well. That's another great chance to get out and help enjoy one of my favorite holidays of the year, probably just behind Christmas. So before we get into. Hearing from Mark and Ellie who are also proud sponsors this year as the Suncoast senior care awards. That also gives me a segue to introduce you guys to Sierra Butler. Again, many of you are familiar with her by now, but she is co-producing these awards with me. And so I'm going to be before we transition over to the caregiver, glossary, quick word from her. And I speaking about the upcoming awards until then everyone stay happy. Hi Sierra long time. No talk,

Sierra:

hi there, Steven. How are you?

Steve:

I'm doing great. Well, as I know, many of our listeners through my podcast have heard you before, for the care awards you are my co-producer. And so that's why we're having you on today. So thank you for joining.

Sierra:

Thank you so much for having me

Steve:

and for those of listeners finding us on Facebook, can you introduce yourself and what you do?

Sierra:

Sure. my name is Sierra Butler. I am an elder law attorney, but mostly I advocate and I like to educate, individuals and families about exactly what elder law is. and I like to connect people with resources. So that's what I do. Yes.

Steve:

Well, wonderful. And that makes you a perfect match as a co-producer for these awards. And speaking of the awards. How did you hear about them and why why'd you get involved in decide to jump on with me?

Sierra:

Well, I was, scrolling around on, on Facebook and I saw that there was a kind of a call for sponsors. and you know, with the whole situation with, with COVID some of the things that I would normally be doing this year, I didn't get to do. And when I saw this and, and, and you reaching out, I thought, Oh my gosh, what a wonderful, wonderful opportunity. And a way to actually help recognize those that are helping seniors. And so I jumped at the chance. I was so excited to have you say, yes, we'd love to have you and you know, help be a sponsor too. So that's why I reached out.

Steve:

Yes. And I mean, I appreciate it so much in having you along on this journey is going to be great. Not only because I love working with you, but with you helping with. The, you know, a lot of the costs this way, people will be able to get awards when they win. And the survey site is so easy to use in trans, you know, transitions on websites and social media very easily, and it's easy to, to share. So, you know, you've helped make my little dream that I had kind of a reality.

Sierra:

That's awesome because anyway, I can help and I know how you are and what time and effort that you can put into things. And I thought, well, if I could supply some of the funds and you had the time and the energy to put into it, I think it could be an awesome success and beginning recognition and to companies and individuals will only help. Promote better care for those seniors that we all, we all love.

Steve:

Yes. And I also, I mean, especially after the year we've had, I feel like we can all use a little extra Pat on the back. And especially if it's voted on by our peers and our families and our clients it'll mean that much more to them. So thank you so much. And how can people find you if they need any help with elder law or your general connection making.

Sierra:

Yeah. So the easiest way to find me, is to go onto my website, www dot Butler, elder law.com. or you can check out our Facebook page as well. If you search for Butler elder law, we have a page we'd love to hear from you.

Steve:

Excellent. Well, thank you so much and we will talk again soon. I'm sure.

Sierra:

Thanks so much, Steve. Have a good day.

Steve:

You too. And welcome to Elli and Mark Baldwin. You might've heard them in our assisted living episode where they help to give guidance on our assisted living and they are here to help give us some more definitions today. Welcome back.

Elli:

Hi. Yeah.

Steve:

Yes. And for listeners who might not have heard your first episode, why don't you introduce yourself and tell a little bit more about your company?

Elli:

so Mark and I, our son ways assisted living concierge. we are a free concierge service for seniors and their caregivers to help them find not only the right care for their loved one, but also all of the resources that usually go along with that journey. we are our free service for them and we're located in Sarasota, Florida

Mark:

just to be an overall support system for them as well.

Steve:

Yes. For sure. And that it brings us right to our first definition. So, you know, aside from all the amazing extra things that you do to help guide people through their journey, what is the basic definition of what somebody can expect from a senior placement service?

Elli:

So I'm a senior placement service is, essentially a service that's gonna work with seniors and their families to identify the level of care that's needed. and then what communities are then available that not just fit those care needs, but also budget location, and all of the extra amenities that kind of go with that person. They're usually free. it's usually how they're set up. Just like fun ways is essentially these services will get paid a referral fee from communities if one of their referrals ends up moving in. So what's great about that is that it's pretty standard in the industry for almost all communities to use services likes on ways a K a senior placement service. So that allows services like us to be very. Unbiased for our clients, which they love. We don't care what community they move into as long as it's the right fit for them. we don't have to push them in one direction or another, if that makes sense.

Steve:

And you guys are definitely a great resource because every month there's a new assisted living, opening up or a new community opening up. And so, Mark, can you give us a little bit more of a definition of what assisted living is and means.

Mark:

Yeah, sure. assisted living is a senior community, that provides care housekeeping meals as needed. obviously they can all look pretty different. Some are residential homes, some look like five star resorts, that look like they're rich sometimes, but all have laundry housekeeping, three mil, three meals, activities, transportation, and whatever level of care that is needed.

Steve:

Excellent. Yes. Perfect. And then I actually will add a fourth one on for you cause they kind of go hand in hand, but why don't you start by defining what an executive director is in an assisted living community, because it's important role that many people don't know about what they do. Exactly.

Elli:

It's a super important role and actually one that we always suggest with our clients that they meet the executive director. so the executive director at a senior living community is typically responsible for overseeing all of the administration, all of the programs, strategic planning of the community as a whole. sometimes their job will also be like including marketing community outreach, et cetera, but at the end of the day, They're the top of the food chain, right? Community. And so their leadership style, their point of view on care, their personality yeah. Is going to really trickle down to all of the positions, not only, managers and directors within the community, but even, you know, housekeepers and people that are working in the dining room. So it is really important that new residents and families are meeting the executive director because you're going to be able to. I don't know, read a lot about the community,

Mark:

get a good feel for the community.

Elli:

Yeah.

Steve:

That is a great definition. And help me brainstorm. Cause I know there are a lot of communities that have different names for them. So I know for instance, at hardest that's Melissa specially, but her job title here is general manager. What are some other titles you heard of

Elli:

before? Oh, yeah. I mean managing director, general manager, executive director.

Steve:

Oh, residence director. I've heard

Elli:

like, senior, like even just administration. And is this, administration director, you know, if there's administration in there because technically everything can kind of fall under that. Yeah. So

Steve:

those are all great. Other words you might hear you.

Elli:

Yeah. But usually if you call and you ask for the executive director, they're going to kind of know what you mean. Yes. Well, it gets you to the right person.

Steve:

And similarly, Mark, why don't you define what director of nursing is? And maybe a couple of other words that they might use to say what that position does.

Mark:

nursing manager,

Elli:

yeah, direct director of nursing, nursing managers, director

Steve:

health and wellness.

Mark:

Yeah.

Elli:

Director of wellness is actually one that seems to be used a lot more and they essentially are going to be overseeing all of the nursing care for that. Community. So they're usually the person that is going to be overseeing the assessment when somebody is getting ready to move into the community so that they can create

Mark:

care plans or specific

Elli:

a specific care plan, each new resident, et cetera, to make sure that they're okay. I think everything that they need and also super important for new residents. To and families to meet a nursing director. I mean, we always say the nursing director, the executive director, and whoever's in charge of the food.

Steve:

Yeah. I hear you. The food's important if you're going to be having it like three times a day.

Mark:

It is. And, you know, to, to piggyback on that, we always suggest them meeting the director of nursing just to make sure that open line of communication is going to be there.

Steve:

Correct. So thank you both. And yes, those are two great positions to meet when you go. But if you need some assistance in your search that you can also give Mark and Ellie a call, what would be the best way to get in contact with you both? Oh,

Mark:

they could reach us on the bat phone, which is (941) 343-7747. As well as go to our website at www dot sun ways, alc.com. and of course, direct email is info at some ways, a llc.com.

Steve:

Perfect. Excellent. Thank you both very much. Thanks

Mark:

Steve.
