Steve:

Hello there, everyone. And welcome to senior living on the Suncoast. I'm your host, Steve Bennet-Martin. I'm happy to bring you the only senior center podcast to assist us all, as we navigate the complex systems of aging together, up and down, the Suncoast, the Florida, my mission with this podcast is to help make sure that the rest of your life is the best of your life, which means today will be talking about how you can start making your own nominations. For the Suncoast senior care awards, 2020 today, our guest expert today is no stranger to my podcast or my home, my wonderful husband, Steven Martin-Bennet. Thank you for joining me today and playing interviewer.

Stephen:

I am so happy to be here and this fulfills my dream of being Barbara Walters. So I am happy to be asking all the tough questions.

Steve:

Yes. And so why don't you get started then?

Stephen:

Okay, well, you mentioned it and so tell us exactly what are the care boards.

Steve:

Well, the way I'm summarizing it is that it is the MES or Oscars or Tony's. Of senior living where it, this way it'll be voted on by the public open voting online for anyone who has access to the internet or a mobile device. And it gives people a chance to vote for their favorites, not only of companies, but also of individuals and really give thanks to the people, providing great care and resources in our community.

Stephen:

That is amazing because that we know how hard. It is working in the senior living field and everybody in there is doing it because they have a passion for it. What inspired you to create that award

Steve:

show? I would say that it was definitely assisted living week. this year I had such a blast planning out the different days for our decades, for the national assisted living week. And at the end of it, as we were wrapping up that event and getting ready for our next, I just realized that I wasn't done. Thanking everyone in our community. And that I wanted to thank more than just the assisted living communities in our area and the people working at them, but at everyone, from, you know, skilled nursing and hospitals to doctors and just everyone that's been making a huge difference this year, more than ever

Stephen:

people outside of the senior living community probably don't realize how it is all structured and what goes into it. When you say. Senior living community. How would the categories are going to be divided?

Steve:

I'm gonna be splitting it up into four main sections. The first being the traditional care providers. So that'll be the opportunity for independent assisted living memory care communities to be acknowledged and nominated skilled nursing, longterm care, hospitals, private duty home health companies, skilled home health companies. It's a chance to really have the companies get a chance to be acknowledged. Because there are many people providing great care through the companies in our area. Of course. Yes. But it has not just it's about companies today in the awards. It's also going to be about the resources for education. So you'll have a chance to nominate your favorite nonprofit resource, your favorite place for education on. Alzheimer's and dementia related needs. Your favorite place for hearing loss needs or vision loss needs, and so resources for the community that might not be providing necessarily hands on care to the seniors, but are still providing these great resources to help them stay cared for.

Stephen:

And what else? So that sounds like two seconds.

Steve:

Yes. And then the third section is the. Care giver awards, which has all of the caregivers nominated. That is how we will be wrapping up the show. And it will be, you know, your favorite nurse, your favorite, you know, not just nurse, but your favorite LPA and your favorite RN, your favorite executive director, your or your favorite administrator, you're gonna have the chance to vote for your favorite individuals. And I feel really happy to be presenting those categories on the individual basis, because so oftentimes it's those individual people like, especially like, I love I'm going to have your favorite housekeeper in a community or that comes to your home. So like, you know, people that provide care that don't always get acknowledged will have the opportunity to

Stephen:

it is wonderful because a lot of the time acknowledgement happens on the company level, but this'll be great too. And acknowledge and thank the people on the individual level that are out there in the trenches every day.

Steve:

Yes. And I am realizing in hindsight that I did combine the middle two categories. So the resources and education assistance we'll have the Alzheimer's and the Parkinson's disease and the hearing impaired resources while the, More nonprofity resources like senior care advisor as care managers, wealth and management advisors. Those will have their own categories as well.

Stephen:

Oh, excellent. It sounds like you're really encompassing all of the moving parts that go into senior living.

Steve:

Well, I've been navigating this industry for almost a decade, so I've wanted to make sure that I gave acknowledgement to everyone that I work with.

Stephen:

Yes. Now I read that Butler elder law is going to be the co-producer for the show. I know, I know that name, but. Can you tell me where I know that name from

Steve:

you probably listened to one of our previous episodes and also know her as a friend of our Sierra book.

Stephen:

That's where I know it.

Steve:

Yes. And so Sierra, who many of you are familiar with? from her episode with elder law. Is also the co-producer of the awards. When I was talking to a few, very close select people about the awards in the very early planning stages, she immediately wanted to throw her full support behind it. And I couldn't thank her enough. And I'm so excited to be working with her as we get the awards show going.

Stephen:

Well, thank you so much, Sarah, for helping get all this off the ground. What other sponsorship opportunities are there. And if someone hears one of these, how would they get involved?

Steve:

Well, I did want to make sure that this is something that the community can get involved in and sponsor at an accessible level for all individuals. And so it is more than just. Paying thousands of dollars at some events that I've been to in the past to make sure that even for small businesses that wanted to put a hundred dollars down, they'll still be able to get our bronze level sponsorship, where they're able to have their logo in their information near the end of the survey and have them acknowledged at the end of the award show. And they got a chance to participate. and then it levels do go up from there. To silver for 200 where they got to have their logo more in the middle of the show and the announcements during the intermission and gold gets your logo placement. At the beginning of the survey, you also get special recognition on social media prior to the event, which I'm sure will also help increase the likelihood of your nominee. Yes. And yes. You also would get a 10 minute featured guest spot on this podcast. So you can talk about your business and how you're involved in what drives your passion for senior care.

Stephen:

And that's an excellent thing, because we all know that now more than ever, people are listening to podcasts on their way to and from work instead of the radio. So getting your name out there with the right type of people, that's. Priceless in and of itself.

Steve:

Exactly. I mean, and that's why we even have, because we have the four different categories. We can have four platinum, some sponsors as well, where they get five dedicated social media posts and audio grams during voting and leading up to the awards to help get their brand out there. The logo will be included at the beginning of the surveys and play starting next with the presenters as the main sponsors of the award. you'll get a 32nd personalized commercial for your business during the award show. And you got actually a 20 minute featured episode of being on this podcast with me.

Stephen:

That's fantastic. And for the very accessible prices, I know that a lot of companies are going to want to take. Advantage of this, but you're talking about all this money and I know you, and I know senior living is about helping people and giving back. So tell me where all these proceeds are gonna go to.

Steve:

Well, only they're not going to be going to taking you on a vacation. These are going to be going back into the community.

Stephen:

Well, I think that's even better.

Steve:

Yes. Well, as many of you are already aware, I am on the board of scan the Sarasota County aging network, as well as very involved in SAC, the Sarasota County, senior advocacy council, and both are great organizations to help give back to the community in different levels. scan provides larger grants to nonprofit organizations to help them provide care to seniors in our community. While SAC provides a smaller need-based grants to seniors to help keep them safe in their home, wherever their home may be. And so with those two mission statements and their inability to fundraise as much this year, as they normally would, I do plan on 30% of the proceeds going to each of those. So a total of 60% of the proceeds will be going to them. And then the remaining 40%, I want to put into a savings to plan this award show again next year in person where we can get venues and we can have, you know, Ron cater the event and just really have it be an all out a word show where everyone can come decked out in their best and get their physical awards and kind of make that savings as well as have similar senior acknowledgement and recognition events throughout the year.

Stephen:

Just the idea of actually being in a room with a bunch of people. Again, that sounds fantastic in and of itself

Steve:

that that's something to look for for the Cara where it's 20, 21. Well,

Stephen:

so let's go back to this year and nominations are going live today. Is that right?

Steve:

Yes. this episode will be released on October 1st. Unless you're one of the few special people who get a preview of the episode or find it. Ooh, but mostly you'll be hearing this on October 1st or later, and that means that nominations are open. So you can actually nominate any person in each category of your choice. So there won't be a selection you are writing in your vote for your favorite and all of the categories right now. So your voice can truly be heard.

Stephen:

And what is the timetable look like for this specific. Sections of voting. So you talked about nomination process. How long has that got

Steve:

to run? Well, nominations are going to be running from October 1st through October 24th or 25th. And that way I have a week to calculate the nominations and figure out the top three to four. nominees in each category so that I'm able to then put it in for the final voting.

Stephen:

And when does that start?

Steve:

That will go live on Sunday, November 1st. And that will run through Friday, November 20th. And that is just in time for the award show to be Monday the 23rd at 6:00 PM on Facebook, YouTube zoom. Here everywhere. So that way it's kind of right before Thanksgiving as a way to thank everyone

Stephen:

that I think the timing of that couldn't be better. Now you're talking about the nominations that are going live today. If people want to be able to vote on this, where can they go to nominate?

Steve:

Well, we will have an event on Facebook and open public event where you can nominate. People through the Facebook vent. So just search for the. Suncoast senior care awards on Facebook, you can also go directly to my website, www dot happy life, pod.com. And I will be either including the website in there. If the nomination survey, if I can figure that out or at the very least there will be a very clear link on the home screen. as well as on the Facebook page for this podcast, which I'm sure most of you already follow senior living on the sunshine coast

Stephen:

and you should, if you're not. So that's a lot of easy ways. They're just going to click the link. It's going to take them to the survey site. They fill in the answers on each of the things, and then you wait for the next round and go back and you'll. Probably create a new event at the beginning of November for the voting process. I'll find that link again. And now is it going to be the top four or five vote getters from the nominator?

Steve:

It'll be three to four, depending on the categories, because there are some categories and there are some might be some depending on the number of votes that Mike at five, but, you know, depending on if there's, you know, it's hospitals, there's only going to be probably four to vote for, you know, in our, in our local area. So, you know, with smaller ones like that, it might be a little more selective in the voting, but if there's multiple options and they're all in very close running, I'm not going to count someone out just because they lost by one nomination vote. Right.

Stephen:

Well, this sounds absolutely exciting. Is there anything else you'd like to add that I haven't thought of to ask?

Steve:

Well, I mean, I kind of broke down how the sponsorships go. So you can also contact me directly if you want it to get involved as a sponsor by either emailing [email protected] or visit the website www dot happy life, pod.com. For more information there.

Stephen:

This is excellent. It's very exciting. Yeah.

Steve:

And do you have anything to add my love?

Stephen:

Well, I mean, I'm not above a shameless plug and if there's any category that you all think that I should just be really a part of, I'm not going to fight you if you want to nominate me for it. So feel free to do that or. If Lake house West ends up being your favorite, independent living community, as it is mine or assisted living community, as it is mine, feel free to nominate us for that. But if it doesn't happen, I won't hold any grudges this time.

Steve:

Yes. Well, that's why I'll be keeping off the voting secret from even him. All right. Well, thank you so much for taking the time to interview me.

Stephen:

Thank you so much for having me on. I really enjoyed it.

Steve:

Yes. And thank you listeners for participating. I hope you're enjoying and stay tuned Dutton on Monday for your normally scheduled podcast cast releases.
